- Q: What causes infertility?
- A: About one-third of infertility cases can be attributed to male factors & about one-third of factors affect women. For the remaining one-third of infertile couples, infertility is caused by a combination of problems in both partners or in about 10 percent of cases, it is unexplained. The advanced age of the woman also plays a role in this.
- Q: I have been busy building a good career for the past decade and now I am ready to be a mother. What does getting pregnant in 30s and 40s involve?
- A: An increasing number of women are choosing to have their first child in their mid-30s or later. The challenge for this age group is that with the body's natural aging process, a woman's eggs age as well; and this phenomenon is a significant cause of infertility and miscarriage. Getting pregnant after age 40 is a challenge for women that may have no other impediment to conception.
- Q: What is intrauterine insemination (IUI)?
- A: Artificial
insemination or
intrauterine insemination (IUI) involves inserting the male partner’s (or
donor’s)
prepared sperm sample through cervix (the neck of the uterus) and into the
cavity of
the uterus, immediately after ovulation.
IUI is often recommended in the setting of short-term unexplained infertility or sexual difficulties as an initial treatment before moving on to more complex fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF). - Q: When is IUI found indicated?
- A: Often, IUI is suitable in case of an Unexplained infertility, Minimal Endometriosis, Cervical Infertility & Mild Male Infertility.
- Q: What are the steps for IUI?
- A: Our fertility specialist will discuss the decision for the best technique with you and your partner. Ovulation induction is done using oral or injectable medication. The woman’s cycle is monitored to determine the day of ovulation – this is often referred to as ‘cycle tracking’. Once the follicle is mature, ovulation is triggered by a special course of medicine. The prepared sperm is inserted directly into the uterine cavity using a very thin catheter.
- Q: What is the procedure of IVF treatment?
- A: In a nutshell, IVF is the process of fertilization which is done by extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. To achieve this, one is given a special course of medicines to optimize the number of eggs. The eggs are extracted via a daycare procedure. The resulting embryos are frozen in the lab. This, in turn, reduces the number of egg pickup cycles. 3-4 cycles of frozen embryo transfer can be done in 1 optimal pickup; hence it reduces the overall cost to the patient. The embryo is then transferred to the uterus. From start to finish this process takes around 6 to 8 weeks. This completes one cycle of IVF.
- Q: Are there any options for preserving fertility in women & men who have been newly diagnosed with cancer?
- A: Yes! New technology lets us freeze unfertilized eggs/sperms/embryos/ovarian and testicular tissues before treating your cancer. This way, you may be able to have children after your treatment. This process is called cryopreservation or freezing.
